An act of terrorism that has killed three generations of a Muslim family and orphaned a young boy has disheartened students across Ontario. We mourn the Afzaal-Salman families and we offer our sincerest condolences to the victims’ friends and families.

OSTA-AECO stands in solidarity with students in the Muslim community and all members of the Islamic faith in the sorrow that has been felt. We condemn such a violent act of Islamophobia, racism, and discrimination.

We urge the government to take proactive steps to prevent the spread of racist and white nationalist ideals. Reaching out to and supporting marginalized students whose voices are often forgotten is a crucial step in implementing policies and preventative measures that start in education with an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens approach.
